Health Reform

Right now, most people are aware of Obama's health reform that he is enthusiastically pushing in congress. Many people are against this bill. I, a democrat, am included among those people. But some don't really know why they are against it, or think they do but they really don't. My goal with this post is to try to explain some of the complaints.

Some people are against it because of the people it taxes. Before I say who, let's backup and see how much money we're talking about. The plan has a bill of 2.5 trillion dollars. The goal of this is for most of it to go to the government, which it will. However, about one million dollars of the 2.5 trillion will be taken care of by taxes. Who does it tax? Who gets stuck with the bill? The upper class, the employers, and the health care providers. Really, only the wealthy are taxed, but the employers and health care providers pay for it by the extra costs it adds for insurance for their employs. Now, most people believe that they may be part of that upper class that gets taxed. However, the truth is is that not many people are part of that class that gets taxed and really one million out of over 2 trillion isn't that much when you really look at it.

Our nation's health care system is broken. And it needs to be fixed. However, I believe that Obama is taking too much of an aggressive approach with the bill that he is trying to pass. Right now, it looks as though congress won't pass it this August which means that it won't come back until after the recess. By then, hopefully Obama will have come up with a better and easier plan that is more stable and approachable during this recession than the one he has proposed now.

A Change in America

Right now, Barack Obama has been pushing some unpopular policies and has also made some questionable remarks regarding things such as the arrest of Professor Gates in Massachusetts. These actions have made him a bit unpopular among republicans and even some democrats. However, one important thing that I would like to point out is not his recent acts or specifics of what he's done during his short time as president, but rather what he has done for the country which really can be described by just one word: change.

He has changed us in multiple ways. One main one being he is the first black president. I'm not going to lie, if blacks hadn't been voting, he wouldn't have won so easily. But still, he needed and got many white votes which shows that it's not just the African American community that likes him. He's a popular charismatic figure who retains that let's-sit-down-and-have-a-beer attitude that Bush had a little have, but with a more likable and charismatic personality. That's not a key quality for running the country, but it helps to support someone you'd probably like in person.

Another change is the literal change of power from President Bush who tried, but let's face it did not succeed at running the country as smoothly as possible. He wasn't a bad man, and actually he was very good at his job of governor. He just wasn't the kind of person who should be president. He had bad advice and bad some bad decision. At the end of the day, you can put it any way you like it, but it's message was still the same: we needed a change.

There are many other ways that Obama has changed our government and our country for better or worse, but I think the important thing to remember here is that he has made a change. That's more than some people can ever say and I salute Obama for being able to say it truthfully.

The Left Side View

As you may have guessed based on the title of this blog, this is a blog that discusses topics from a bit of a liberal point of view. The words in the title illustrate this. The words "left side" representing the left wing democratic party and the word "view" obviously representing itself showing the fact that this blog will have a bit of a left wing view. That does not mean however that I do not want conservatives or republicans commenting and looking at this blog. I actually welcome them to read and comment and tell me their view which would most likely be right wing. I also encourage liberals to comment and wither agree or disagree with me. The main function of this blog being to discuss and debate, the more the merrier. Agree or disagree, I hope you will read and comment on this blog and it's posts.
